Website maintenance checklist: 10 things to check every month

· 4 min read · By Team Kritikatha

A website isn't a one-time project. This practical monthly checklist keeps yours fast, secure and bringing in leads, in under two hours.

Most websites don't break all at once. They decay quietly. A plugin falls out of date, a contact form stops sending emails, a page slows down after a new banner is added, an old offer stays live for months. None of it is dramatic, but together these issues cost you rankings, trust and leads, often without anyone noticing.

The fix is a simple monthly routine. Here are the ten checks we recommend for any business website, whether it runs on WordPress, Shopify or a custom stack. Most can be done in under two hours once you're used to them.

1. Test every form and lead path

Your forms are where visitors become leads, so test them first. Submit every contact, quote and newsletter form, and check the message arrives where it should, in your inbox, CRM or WhatsApp. Click your phone and WhatsApp buttons on a mobile phone too. A broken form is the most expensive bug a business website can have, because you only find out when you notice enquiries have stopped.

2. Update the CMS, themes and plugins

Outdated software is one of the most common ways websites get hacked. Apply updates to your CMS, theme and plugins regularly, but take a backup first and check the site afterwards, because updates occasionally clash with each other. Remove plugins you no longer use; every extra plugin is extra risk.

3. Confirm backups work and can be restored

Having backups isn't enough. You need backups that work. Check that automatic backups are running, that they're stored somewhere separate from your hosting, and that they include both files and the database. Every few months, test a restore on a staging copy so you know the process works before you need it in an emergency.

4. Check page speed on mobile

Most of your visitors are likely on phones, and slow pages lose people quickly. Run your key pages, such as the home page, main service or product pages and landing pages, through Google PageSpeed Insights and look at the mobile results and Core Web Vitals. Common culprits include oversized images, too many third-party scripts, heavy sliders and unoptimised fonts.

Broken links frustrate visitors and waste the authority your pages have earned. Use a crawler or the reports in Google Search Console to find links pointing to pages that no longer exist. Fix the link or add a redirect to the most relevant live page. If you've recently renamed or removed pages, double-check these first.

6. Review Google Search Console

Search Console is free and tells you how Google sees your site. Each month, check the indexing report for pages that can't be indexed, look for any manual actions or security issues, and review the performance report for queries and pages that are rising or falling. Submit your sitemap if you've added important new pages.

7. Check your SSL certificate and security basics

Make sure your SSL certificate is valid and set to renew automatically, and that every page loads over HTTPS without mixed-content warnings. Review admin user accounts and remove anyone who no longer needs access. Use strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication wherever your platform supports it.

8. Refresh outdated content

Old prices, expired offers, past events and outdated team details make a business look inactive. Scan your main pages for anything that's no longer true, and update it. This is also a good moment to refresh a blog post that ranks but could be more helpful, since updated, accurate content tends to perform better over time.

9. Review analytics for drop-offs

Open your analytics and look at your top pages, traffic sources and conversions. Which pages get visits but no enquiries? Where do visitors leave? A page with high traffic and few conversions is an opportunity: a clearer headline, a stronger call to action or a shorter form can make a real difference.

10. Check how the site looks on real devices

Finally, browse your own website on a phone, a tablet and a laptop as if you were a customer. Is the menu easy to use? Is text readable without zooming? Do buttons work and images load? Ten minutes of honest browsing often catches problems that automated tools miss.
